How to tell what Shopify theme is being used? Read this post to learn about three practical methods.

The look and feel of a Shopify store is no less important than its functionality. That’s why picking a unique-looking and visually appealing Shopify theme should be the first thing on every merchant’s mind. One of the ways to do that is to see what themes other online stores have chosen. Suppose you have stumbled upon a theme that you like. What’s next? How can you find out its name in order to download it from the official Shopify theme store? Below, we describe three effective ways to address this task.

You have decided to launch your online store and opted for Shopify as your e-commerce platform. Excellent choice! This system is very easy to set up and run by everyone no matter the technical background.

It has tons of default features and extensions to facilitate any business operations you might need to perform. These include dropshipping, working with social media, search engine optimization, advertising, reporting and analytics, customer service, managing products and inventory, to name just a few.

All this great functionality, though, can be useless if your store looks boring and dull. The good news is that Shopify helps you define your e-commerce site’s appearance as well.

At the moment, it offers merchants over 80 customizable themes for different wallet sizes and tastes. In addition, you can hire a professional Shopify developer to create a truly unique theme to make your site one of a kind.

This diversity is enough to make a beginner’s head spin. Selecting a perfect theme for your niche on the brand Shopify store may seem daunting. There’s an alternative approach. Why not spend some time browsing other sites that sell the same merchandise as you do?

This brings you several advantages.

  1. You can shortlist the stores you would want to imitate (with modifications).
  2. You can understand what designs don’t work for you.
  3. You can learn how much a theme costs (if it’s not free) and whether you can afford it painlessly for your business.

You can determine if a certain store is based on Shopify by entering inurl:.myshopify.com into the address bar or by using this site, for example. Once you’ve identified the theme that appeals to you, you need to get its name. Thus, you will be able to find the theme among those the vendor offers in a split second.

So, how to find out what Shopify theme a website is using? It’s a piece of cake, really. Just apply one of the three techniques we have described below.

How to Tell What Shopify Theme Is Being Used?

#1: The Slowest Way — Search for the Name in the Site’s Source Code

The first technique we suggest assumes looking under a site’s hood. That is, you will need to do some work with the page source. Don’t let this scare you, though. You don’t have to code or anything like that. You just need to search the site’s internal structure for a specific phrase.

So, here’s how to find out what Shopify theme a website is using by viewing its source code:

  1. Enter the inurl:.myshopify.com query into the address or search box. That’s a Google-specific operator for filtering down the search results. You will see a list of Shopify-powered sites. We chose a store called Daycrafter, currently located on the second results page, but you can click any other link.
  2. Open the site.
  3. Use the Ctrl + U key combo (Firefox, Chrome) or CMD + OPT + U (Safari) to bring up a page with the site’s source code.
  4. Use the Ctrl + F key combo (Firefox, Chrome) or CMD + F (Safari) to bring up the search box.
  5. Type in shopify.theme. This will highlight the place where these words appear on the page. Three lines will be highlighted. The first one contains the word “name.” What comes after the colon is the actual name of the Shopify theme the site is using. In our example, this is “Boundless.”Shopify.name shows the name of the current Shopify theme
  6. Go to the Shopify theme store and type in Boundless into the search box. This query will return the corresponding result.

Custom Themes Vs Ready-Made Themes

As we said earlier, many businesses prefer hiring professional Shopify theme developers to make a truly outstanding theme to beat the competition. The description of a custom theme in the source code looks a bit different from the description of a theme found on the Shopify brand store.

So, on step #5 above, in the first line, find the theme_store_id property. If you see a number after the colon, this is a theme you can find on the Shopify brand store.

By contrast, if you see the word null after the colon, it means the theme is custom-made, and you will not find it on the Shopify store. Here’s an example: Null means this is a custom Shopify theme

#2: The Golden Mean — Install an Add-On

If you’re a staunch Google Chrome fan, consider installing an extension such as Shopify theme detector. Once you’ve added it to your browser, do the following:

  1. Open the site you want to check.
  2. Click the extension’s icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select the Shopify Theme Detector menu item. The add-on will show you the name of the theme.

#3: The Easiest Way — Use Specialized Tools Available on the Internet

There’s an even easier way to tell what Shopify theme is being used. All you need is a site specifically dedicated to identifying Shopify themes. Just enter the query Shopify theme detector into the search box. You will see a bunch of sites to choose from.

For example, you can use this one. Copy and paste the web address of the Shopify site you like into the Website URL box and click the Detect Theme button. This will immediately return the name of the theme. You can also find out if it’s custom or ready-made without any more effort on your part.

Final Words

Shopify has a variety of ready-made themes you can select from. But merchants first starting out often struggle with the choice of a suitable theme for their specific niche. One way to solve this problem is to review similar online stores, shortlist one with the best-looking theme, and then download it from the official brand store.

But how to find out what Shopify theme a website is using? That’s when you can apply one of the three methods we have discussed in this post.
